HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A Huntsville teacher received a $1,000 scholarship on Wednesday.
The Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Shatia Howard, a kindergarten teacher at Lakewood Elementary School.
The competitive scholarship is awarded to Alabama K-8 educators in support of history and civics-related projects in their schools and classrooms.
The scholarship aids in attending a conference, purchasing classroom materials, or creating programs that help students better understand history and civics.
The scholarship was created in 2003 in memory of Jenice Riley, the daughter of former Alabama Gov. Bob Riley. She loved teaching and had a desire to learn within her students.
