BRAWLEY — The Foundation for Education’s fifth annual golf fundraiser, held on Feb. 15 at the Del Rio Country Club in Brawley, was a resounding success, raising crucial funds for scholarships benefiting alternative education and special education students in Imperial County, according to an Imperial County Office of Education press release.
Some 104 golfers, comprising 26 teams, enjoyed a beautiful day on the greens, participating in a scramble-style tournament. The event featured a raffle with a variety of prizes, including an RC car donated by Desert RV, restaurant gift certificates and gift baskets.
The top teams and Closest to the Pin winners were celebrated at the event. The Garland Team (John Beltran, Mike Reyla, Anthony Valenzuela and Armando Valenzuela) came in first place, followed by the Sun Community Team (Daniel Paramo, Daniel Paramo Jr., Josh Wise and Joel Gonzalez Sr.) and the Smith-Kandal Insurance/Real Estate Team (Matt Buckner, Blaise Smith, Josh Fargo and Dr. Brian Tyson). Blaise Smith and Manny Gamez won the Closest to the Pin contests held on Hole 3 and 16, each winning a $100 gift certificate from Grasso’s Restaurant and Town Pump/Brownie’s Diner.
“A huge thank you to our generous sponsors, enthusiastic golfers, and community members for making our fifth annual golf fundraiser a resounding success, directly benefiting our most vulnerable students,” said Dr. Todd Finnell, county superintendent of schools and Foundation for Education president. “We are truly grateful for the support of our community in supporting education.”
The Foundation for Education is currently accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors enrolled in alternative education/continuation schools, Imperial Pathways Charter School, or students with disabilities who attend a career technical school, community college or university in the fall. The application window closes on April 17 and awards will be made on May 19.
The next Foundation for Education fundraiser is the annual Autumn & the Arts Fundraiser, a celebration of students, the arts, and education, scheduled on Oct. 2.
