Jack Richards
Six local high school seniors have been chosen as the inaugural winners of grants from the Jack Richards Athletic Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The fund, established to honor the life and legacy of Jack Richards, aims to support outstanding student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional dedication to both their academic and athletic pursuits. It also supports individuals seeking higher education with the goal of pursuing a career in mental health services.
Jack Richards was someone who embodied unparalleled athleticism, natural leadership, intellectual talent and steadfast determination, organizers of the fund said.
Jack graduated from Royal High School in 2020 and Northwest Lineman College in 2021, then worked as a union lineman for two years. He died by suicide in July 2023.
The scholarship bearing his name reflects his legacy of kindness, unwavering loyalty, athletic resilience and persistent spirit, organizers said.
This year, the fund awarded scholarships to the following high school seniors:
Audrey Barajas (Monte Vista High)
Naibe Luna and Mason Carrillo (Royal High School)
Nuria Gordon (Santa Susan High)
Antara Majumder and Rheannon Wakefield (Simi Valley High School)
“We are thrilled to award these scholarships to such deserving students,” said Carol Richards, Jack’s mother and director of the scholarship fund.
“Jack believed in the power of sports to build character and teach life skills, and these recipients exemplify those values. We look forward to seeing all they will achieve in the future.”
