DES Moines, Iowa — Major General Stephen Osborn with the Iowa National Guard gave an address on the Condition of the Guard on Thursday.
He also asked lawmakers to pass certain policies, including expanding the Iowa National Guard's service scholarship to include certificates and credentialing programs and open those scholarships up for Iowans at accredited state institutions, not just for undergraduate degree programs.
He's also asking the legislature to exempt Iowa National Guard members from the state's new chronic absenteeism law.
"Finally, we request an exception to the current chronic absenteeism law for military applicants and those fulfilling their duty without being penalized academically," Major General Osborn said. "We ask for your support of this provision to help our high school military applicants and recruits seamlessly enter the military and begin their service."
Major General Osborn also highlighted the Iowa National Guard's 2024 service along with future deployments.
63 Iowa soldiers are currently in Washington D.C. helping with Trump's Inauguration on Monday, along with almost 2,000 soldiers being deployed to the Middle East this year to provide security, support, and help maintain stability in the region.
