Jamaican Canadian educator Dr Andrew B. Campbell (Dr ABC) has announced the February 4 launch of a scholarship foundation to support the black community, and celebrate black excellence.
The brunch titled ‘Iron Sharpens Iron – Episode #1: Black Excellence 365 Brunch’, is scheduled for Parkview Manor, 55 Barber Greene Road (Unit #1) in Toronto from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“The idea for the event came about as another way for us to continue to inspire each other. I am a firm believer in the power of community. I am constantly thinking of ways in which we can show up for each other, how we hold each other up, and how we cheer for each other,” Dr Campbell explained.
He added: “There is power in the community. The resources we need are within the community, and we need to be more intentional in what we bring to the community and how we pour into the community.”
A portion of ticket sales for the event will be used to fund the scholarship for Jamaicans and black Canadians.
“$10 from the sale of every ticket sold will go towards the Dr ABC Educational Scholarship Foundation for Canada and Jamaica. This event is an impactful way to support the black community, celebrate black excellence and contribute to black educational opportunities,” Dr ABC said.
Additionally, he said the brunch will provide “a perfect networking opportunity” for attendees, with black entrepreneurs sharing their experiences. He said “these entrepreneurs will add another layer of value to the event as these connections can foster partnership, mentorship, and the sharing of knowledge within the community”.
Dr Campbell, who is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, is committed to raising awareness about injustice against racialised groups and advancing anti-discrimination work in teacher education. He received the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE’s) 2022 award for Excellence in Initial Teacher Education, which underscores the impact of his work in this area.
