The Jennings County Community Foundation recently announce that the recipient of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Jennings County is senior Claire Hack of Jennings County High School.
Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character and leadership, according to a news release from the foundation.
This year’s applicants demonstrated many quality attributes along with academic excellence” said Kelly Kent, Executive Director of the Jennings County Community Foundation.
Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.
Lilly Endowment Community Scholars also may participate in the Lilly Scholars Network which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and network are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.
“This is a life changing opportunity, and I will not take this for granted. I appreciate the trust you have put into me,” Hack said.
Hack is a member of the basketball and softball teams, the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Student Athlete Leadership Team, Panther Student Leaders and Hurley’s Hooligans.
She said her interests outside of school include spending time with friends and family, reading, listening to music and watching sports.
“Although my plans on where to attend college are undecided at this time, I plan to study genetics with hopes of becoming a genetic counselor,” Hack said.
In determining Jennings County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, consideration was given to Academic Performance, Leadership and School Activities, Community Involvement & Volunteer Service, Employment, Essay Special Circumstances, and Interview by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.
“There are so many deserving students that choosing one overall winner is such a challenge because we see so many great academic performers throughout this process.” said Kelly Kent, executive director of the Jennings County Community Foundation.
Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.
The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.
Jennings County Community Foundation celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2024 and continues to assist non-profit organizations in the community along with offering local scholarships to assist students who plan to further their education. Our Mission is to develop endowments that will greatly improve the quality of life for Jennings County residents in perpetuity; to provide responsible stewardship of those gifts; to promote leadership in addressing community issues; and to make grants in the fields of community service, social service, education, health, environment and the arts.
