LEXINGTON, Ky. (WBKO) – A Kentucky student has presented a scholarship at the 52nd annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday commemorative program at the Central Bank Center.
On Jan. 20, the Bluegrass Community and Technical College presented Berea-native Valerie Morris with its annual MLK Scholarship
According to the release, Lexington’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration is one of the longest-running events of its kind. This event was created to honor the legacy of Dr. King while also supporting a scholarship for an undergraduate student in his name.
Stacy Webster, BCTC Associate Professor of Communication, served as the Scholarship Coordinator on the planning committee.
“I’m thrilled to be part of the scholarship committee and to help select the deserving student who will attend both BCTC and Kentucky State University,” Webster said in a release. “The applicants are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to civil and human rights, aligning with Dr. King’s vision. It brings me great joy to guide this process and to welcome another outstanding student to our college.”
Morris, this year’s recipient, is a senior at Madison Southern High School in Berea and a dual credit student at BCTC, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Her teachers and employers describe her as hardworking, dependable, creative, and organized, per the release.
She is also passionate about pursuing a degree in Diagnostic Sonography. Outside of her studies, she enjoys ice skating and spending time with her peers.
“We are incredibly proud not only to participate in this significant program but also to present a scholarship in Dr. King’s honor,” said Dr. Greg Feeney, BCTC President/CEO in a release. “Our college is dedicated to providing open access and prioritizing student success. I am impressed by Valerie Morris and welcome her to BCTC! I am also grateful to Stacy Webster and the entire planning team for carrying forward Dr. King’s vision. BCTC will continue to be a catalyst for serving our community and beyond.”
