The League of Women Voters of Moore County announced their Civic Leader Scholarship recipients for 2024 on March 26, at the annual Lunch with Legends event, held at Forest Creek Country Club. Sarah Archer, of Pinecrest High School, received a $1,000 Civic Leader Scholarship. Katelyn DuBose, of Pinecrest High School, and Paris McCollum, of North Moore High School, each received a $500 Civic Leader Scholarship. These students were selected based on their strong academic performances and evidence of their exceptional leadership and civic mindedness, both in their schools and in their communities.
Archer was described by her Odyssey of the Mind coach as a “brilliant and critical thinker, a motivated and creative problem solver, a vivacious and charismatic leader …. who has every intention of discovering her voice and being the voice for the voiceless.” Her application and interview not only reflected these qualities but also indicated her desire to inspire all people to find their voice, to value it, and to use it to benefit all people. Archer has distinguished herself as an AP scholar and will graduate at the head of her class — ranking No. 1 out of 510 students. One of her most notable achievements is being a very active member of the Pinecrest Speech and Debate team. In this capacity, she has traveled to numerous states representing her team and winning awards in many situations, including at Harvard University. An active member of the Tarheel Forensic League, she recently was awarded state championship runner-up in Original Oratory and Impromptu competition. As she has participated, she has always advocated for minorities like herself to have equal opportunities. Archer will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and plans to double major in public policy and global studies. Her future plans are to either attend law school or work for the U.S. State Department with the hope of becoming a diplomat.
