ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) –
Applying for college has always been a stressful and competitive process, but what if it didn’t have to be?
Legacy High School is using a new ‘matchmaking’ app where universities are reaching out to students not the other way around.
Students are receiving over 31 million dollars in scholarships and hundreds of college admissions through a new online platform to find the perfect college match.
The 31.1 million dollars in scholarship offers equals 419 college admissions, and over 200 thousand scholarship offers per student who uses the app this year.
Match, powered by Concourse, is a free student-friendly app that offers scholarships and admission up front.
Universities will connect with students based on their desired location, personal interests, and cost of living.
Vanessa Wimberley, College, Career and Military Readiness Coordinator for Legacy High School, said, “There’s fewer questions, there’s more student-based questions, and the students get to answer in their own language and their own terminology. And so, it’s just more friendly for a generation that is used to doing everything on Tik Tak (TikTok) or Snapchat or you know any of those sort of easy platforms.”
The student profile takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
Legacy High School is making it easier for students by offering help in and out of the classroom.
“We have implemented where the teachers are talking to them about it,” said Wimberley.
She continued “I call the kids in and discuss the different scholarships with them. We will have communication with the parents if the parents want conversations. Mostly we’re just trying to make it accessible.”
Outside of Apply Texas and Common Application most students are creating applications for every university where they wish to apply.
Match gives every student a chance to go to any college with the support they need to succeed.
She said, “A lot of times we don’t think out of our comfort zone. And so, this gives students an opportunity to realize their value. Not just to our local community, but to the community at large which is the world.”
MISD is currently working on expanding the program to Midland and Coleman High School.
