Nebraskans, let’s pause, take a deep breath and consider what our Nebraska Legislature is attempting to do.
A bill has been introduced by freshman Sen. Tony Sorrentino from Elkhorn to revive a bill allowing Nebraska state income tax credits for people donating to scholarship funds for students who attend private and religious schools.
The state of Nebraska will credit up to $25 million the first year until 2027 and could grow each year until reaching a cap of $100 million.
Sorrentino and proponents seem to be overlooking one major issue. By statewide vote, Nebraskans have said, “no.” This issue of state tax support for private and religious schools has come up several times and has been universally rejected until the last biennium when a backroom, sleight-of-hand measure passed a legislative vote in the last hours of the final day.
A petition drive commenced and successfully provided Nebraskans with the voice of the vote and by a majority of 57% resoundingly said “repeal the tax credit voucher law for religious and private schools.”
Again, Nebraskans (the second house) are being summarily disregarded. This issue is like toe fungus; it just never goes away. I am calling and writing to my senator to vote “no” on LB509. Everyone should do the same to sustain the legitimacy of the people’s voice. Some lawmakers seem to be tone deaf.
