Discovery School has been designated as Ohio’s latest “Wild School Site” by the Division of Wildlife. It’s just the fourth location in Richland County and the 198th location in Ohio to receive the title. The award was presented on Earth Day, April 22, by Jen Dennison, education coordinator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Discovery students have engaged in a variety of projects, such as vernal pool clean-up, butterfly garden installation, bat box installation/monitoring and various litter clean-ups, that provide both habitat and food resources for wildlife around the school’s large woodland property. Discovery’s weekly “Woods” program and Wildlife Wednesday series also provide on-going education about Ohio’s native wildlife.
Discovery School also teaches students a variety of outdoor skills such as hiking, shelter building, and even archery. The Archery Club is led by NASP certified(National Archery in Schools Program) instructor/Head of School Julie Schwartz.
“Outdoor learning has been proven to develop a true spirit of Earth stewardship in children,” said Schwartz. “We feel a tremendous sense of responsibility to the kids and to the planet in that way. They are naturally curious and action-oriented. We just need to not be afraid to let them get dirty!”
Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center announces moves within the administration. Michelle Patrick has been hired for the newly-created student learning and skills recovery position, effective July 1. Patrick is the principal at Abraxas. The position is being funded by a grant.
Patrick will provide direct support services to district administration, teachers and support service personnel to identify learning loss, deficits in skill acquisition and skill development to create a service plan to positively impact students’ academic achievement, fine and gross motor development, speech and language acquisition, and vision/mobility goals.
Assuming the principal position at Abraxas will be current special education consultant Jolene Edwards.
ONTARIO — Ontario High School has announced the following students have been named to the 2022 prom court. This years prom will take place Saturday evening at Ontario High School.
GALION — Galion Middle School students and families will have the opportunity to add flair, color and school spirit to the building during the GMS Family Art Night from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Students and families will have the opportunity to paint hallway ceiling tiles, in pre-designed templates with themes and Tiger Pride.
Three Bean Coffee House and Tiger Blendz will be on hand offering sweets and an assortment of beverages for purchase during the event.
The event is free with all supplies included. However, space is limited, and families are required to complete an online interest form at forms.gle/nkAeFKxkLftQb3z56.
Families are asked to dress appropriately because the event involves the use of acrylic paints.

Two Richland County students are among 10 from Ashland University’s Dauch College of Business and Economics who received recognition and a scholarship as they were chosen as Emerson Scholars for the 2022-23 academic year. Abigail Knapp, a business management and marketing double major from Ontario, and Kaitlynn Winters, a marketing major from Shelby, will each receive a $3,500 scholarship.
Students from Crestview and Ashland have earned scholarships through the annual Ohio Electric Cooperatives Children of Members Scholarship Competition. Morgan Welch of Crestview Local High School and Jack Sears of Northmor were awarded an honorable mention, $1,500 scholarships. Both were sponsored by Firelands Electric Cooperative.
Mansfield Branch NAACP Life Membership Banquet will be held June 11 at the Life Celebration Center, 129 S. Main St., Mansfield. The banquet will honor Dennis A. Baker and Ronald Moton Sr. as fully-paid Life Members of the NAACP. The keynote speaker is Dr. Victor Coleman of Toledo.
