PRINCE GEORGE—Wynne Fitzpatrick a first-year nursing baccalaureate student at CNC has just received a $5,000 national scholarship from Crohn’s and Colitis Canada for her academic achievements and ability to inspire others with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Reflecting on her past, Wynne says that when she was diagnosed with IBD at a young age a nurse took the time to help braid her hair. That moment led Wynne to want to become a nurse in order to help others feel better.
“I want to be able to do that for someone,” say Wynne. “Just be there for them and not just look at them as another task to do.”
Inflammatory bowel disease affects the bodies gastrointestinal track including stomach intestines and esophagus.
“Basically your immune system doesn’t like you and it decides to attack,” explains Wynne. “It’s inflammation of your intestines. It can be in your colon. It can be in your small intestines, anywhere in there. Luckily for me, I got it everywhere,” explain Wynne.
Pushing through her disease and the Chronic pain that comes with it, Wynne’s passion for nursing means she will be helping other like her.
“A lot of people with IBD get brushed aside or their symptoms get put off. And, I feel like having that experience is really going to help me in my practice.” says Wynne
Wynne adds that she is super appreciative of the added funding.
“The Clinton
Clinton Shard Memorial Scholarship. really inspires me. And push it pushes me to keep going in nursing, just knowing that I have their support and that I’m kind of living the legacy of Clinton, who’s no longer with us.
