It was a big day for some local nursing school students! Twin States News’ Cohlby Sims was there.. as a local hospital gave out scholarships to honor their hard work and dedication.
Seven MCC nursing students were given scholarships today during a luncheon at Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center.
These students were chosen due to their success in school and their passion for helping people.
CEO of Baptist Anderson Medical Center, John Anderson, expresses how important nurses are to the hospitals they work in.
“From a hospital standpoint nursing is a core service. Um, it is what we do each and every day. Without bedside nurses, without clinically prepared nurses we can’t take the patients that cross our thresholds.”
The U.S. healthcare system is struggling with nursing shortages due to burnout, stress, overworking, and unsafe working conditions.
Twin States News spoke with two of the scholarship recipients about their choice to become a nurse, even though it is such a stressful job.
Emily Arias has this to say, “I just love to help people and when I was younger, I got to intern in the hospital, and got to see labor and delivery, and that’s just where it really started for me.”
“Everywhere you go people need nurses. I just want to help people, and I am a really big caretaker,” mentions Keri Hans.
Another MCC nursing student, Andrea Sciple, mentioned her love for helping those in need and also shared a quote that she used in her scholarship essay.
“If I could be the best part of someone’s worst day, then I feel like I did my job as a nurse.”
Regardless of long hard hours and a shortage of nurses, these students are passionate about their future career in the medical field.
