CANTON — Madrid-Waddington and Edwards-Knox staged the 25th annual Bagley Scholarship Classic at SUNY Canton on Saturday. The game has quietly but very efficiently become one of the most sucessful events in Section 10.
Each year money raised at the game finances the Rachel M. and Leon E. Bagley Endowed Scholarship with the Canton College Foundation at SUNY Canton. The scholarship was established in 2000 each year provides tuition assistant for one graduate of Edwards-Knox and Madrid-Waddington Central Schools.
M-W prevailed in Saturday’s game 57-32 but the Jackets and the Cougars all came away as winners as over $2500 was raised for the scholarship fund. To date over $50,000 has been raised to fund 100 scholarships according to TJ Bagley, the of Leon and Rachael. who directed Saturday’s events.
Currently scholarship recipients are: Dylan Wood, Benjamin Heller, Abigail Backus-Mackey and Sabryna Matthews.
Leon Bagley was raised in Madrid and after a Tour of Duty in World War II he enrolled at Canton ATI (now SUNY Canton) under the GI Bill. After graduating in 1948 he began a 35-year career with General Electric. Rachel (McFerran) Bagley grew up Edwards and went to work for General Electric in Schenectady.
They were married in 1955 and raised a family of five children while living in Pennsylvania and Mississippi and after retirement spent their summers in Canton.
In 2000 they established the scholarship in honor of Rachel’s mother Ruth McFeerran and Leon’s sister-in law Helen Bagley who were both long-time teachers at Edwards Central and Madrid-Waddington Central.
M-W 57 – E-K 32: Both Coach Aaron Jones’ Jackets and Coach Jake Rowley’s Cougars featured outstanding young talent. Sophomores Jamison Zysik and Murphy Burke led M-W with a 13 and 10 points and two other 10th graders Eli Cruz and Colby Todd each scored six as the M-W followed up a 57-38 NAC East win over Salmon River on Thursdau to climb to 4-1 in the division.
Their only loss in the division came in the final seconds against unbeaten Chateaugay.
“In our games ahead we could win them all or lose them all. There are a lot of tough teams in the East. We have to get better but we have guys who will work to do that.”
In his first season at the E-K helm Coach Rowley is pleased with the work ethic of the Cougars who were led in Saturday’s game by nine points from smooth freshman Jaxin White. Seniors Cooper Allen and Kale Geer netted six and five points and sophomore Caleb Robinson also scored five.
