Good Samaritan Masonic Lodge 336 of Gettysburg recently presented its annual scholarships to four local high school students.
Recipients were Holly Best of Fairfield Area High School, Margaret “Molly” Heaton of Gettysburg Area High School, and Leah Talkington and Nadalie King, both of Bermudian Springs High School.
The scholarships, awarded by the lodge for many years, are based on factors including teacher recommendations, student essays, and grades, according to lodge Scholarship Chairman Richard McGeary.
Best plans to begin her post-secondary education at Harrisburg Area Community College and transfer to Pennsylvania Western University Clarion with the goal of studying library science to become a librarian and writer. She has volunteered at her local library, the Upper Adams Lions Club, the National Apple Harvest Festival, and her church. The National Honor Society member’s mother is Deanna Best.
Heaton plans to attend Bryn Mawr College to study political science and pre-law with the goal of becoming a criminal defense attorney. She has been active in Job’s Daughters and joins several generations of her family in participating in the Order of the Eastern Star. She has been a member of her school’s speech and debate team and Environmental Club. Her parents are Andy and Charity Heaton.
King plans to attend Bloomsburg University to major in business administration with a goal of becoming an event planner. She has been active in Girl Scouts for 13 years and works part-time at a pharmacy and an event planning business. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Interact Rotary Club. Her grandfather and several uncles are Masons.
Talkington plans to attend Penn State at State College to study business with a goal of becoming an attorney. She has a part-time job and works during the summer as a lifeguard. She is a Girl Scout and has been involved in many volunteer activities in her school and the community. She is a member of the National Honor Society and serves on her school’s student council. Her parents are Jason and Stacia Talkington.
