YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board, through a partnership with the Youngstown chapter of Links Inc., has awarded its Mental Health Studies Scholarships that are aimed at increasing minority representation in the social work and mental health fields.
The scholarships will be presented to the recipients Monday during a meeting at the board’s office, 222 W. Federal St.
A total of six scholarships were awarded, including $1,000 scholarships to Miah Pierce, Dickson, Alicia Clark-Williams and Kaylarin Olds; and $500 scholarships were awarded to Melea Johnson and Kelie Turner.
All recipients are Mahoning County students pursuing a degree in social work at Youngstown State University, with a commitment to advancing social work and mental health causes in minority communities.
“We are thrilled to award our first round of scholarship recipients for the Mental Health Students Scholarship and play a role in developing the next generation of social work and mental health professionals,” said Duane Piccirilli, executive director of the Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board. “There is a great need in our community for professionals not only in this field of study, but also professionals that represent the people they serve.”
Valerie Burney, community engagement and outreach coordinator for the board, said there’s an increased demand for social workers and mental health professionals.
“Year-over-year we see an increased demand for social workers and mental health professionals, and even more so for people of color in those professions. Through these scholarships, we can help to lift the burden of educational costs for students and work to address the mental health needs in our community.”
