HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Mercy House has launched the J. Wayne Harold Memorial Scholarship, a $5,000 fund aimed at supporting individuals connected to the organization’s shelter and housing programs.
The scholarship honors Harold, a longtime volunteer and board member known for his generosity and dedication to the community. Mercy House Executive Director Shannon Porter said the initiative is a meaningful way to preserve Harold’s legacy.
“Wayne Harold was an extraordinary human being, and we want to make sure he is remembered,” Porter said. “He was very much about giving of himself—very active in the community and did a lot of volunteering.”
The scholarship funds can be used for higher education, vocational training, or job development. Harold’s family will play a key role in selecting recipients, ensuring the award continues to support those striving for self-sufficiency. Porter also noted that Mercy House is seeing a growing need for housing support as more families struggle with affordability.
“It’s a serious time for us right now, and we are very concerned about making sure we can help the community,” Porter said explaining the scholarship is a step toward providing long-term assistance, and the organization hopes to expand the fund in the future. .
