CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s fraternity brothers celebrated his holiday early by giving young people in the community the gift of education.
Alpha Phi Alpha, of which King was a member, hosted the second annual MLK scholarship fund.
The fraternity’s education fund hopes to raise $50,000 to go right back into the community.
Mayor Juandiego Wade, member of Alpha Phi Alpha, attended and said advocating for education was an important part of MLK’s legacy.
“We’re just really excited that we could do this in honor of the fraternity that I’m part of, that a lot of these other people are apart of, that the same as Martin Luther King Jr.,” Wade said. “We just had a lot of different organizations to come out and say they see the importance of this as well.”
Wade stressed to attendees the value of mentorship and education to support the younger generation.
