Morden residents Maiya Aschberg and Stephan Buchsmann were two of four recipients of this year’s Michael Mutcheson Scholarship.
In total, $12,000 in scholarships were handed out to Aschberg, Buchsmann and Milton, Ontario’s Megan Carter and Jessica Brown.
Ray Mutcheson, Michael Mutcheson Memorial Trust Fund Chair, explains the scholarship fund in his brother’s name is nearing $1 million in grants.
He notes both his parents were heavily involved in community and coaching children and “they passed their love of children and community down to their family.”
Michael’s life was tragically cut short after a car accident in 1995. The initial funds for the scholarship were raised by friends at that time.
“Michael Mutcheson lived life to the fullest. He loved athletic pursuits of many sports,” Ray explains. “Michael knew what it was to struggle to excel, he was resourceful and worked hard for all his accomplishments.
He adds his brother's life was marked by "a wonderful sense of humour, energy and enthusiasm for all he undertook," and that Michael also was generous to those who were struggling to excel.
The Michael Mutcheson Memorial Trust fund was started in 1996 for the purpose of raising money for scholarship awards to assist worthy high school graduates involved in athletics, located in Milton, Ontario where Mutcheson lived and in Morden, Manitoba where he grew up, in their pursuit to secure a higher education.
In 2003, the foundation had accumulated sufficient surplus funds to award scholarships in perpetuity.
