Missouri State University has launched the Engaged Citizen Award (ECA), a new scholarship that “recognizes students’ effort and dedication to building a better community.” A post to the Office of Student Financial Aid news blog announced the change on Feb. 5.
The Inclusive Excellence Scholarship is no longer active, says a statement from the Office of Enrollment Management and Services outlining the new scholarship. The ECA will not replace the Inclusive Excellence Award, according to the statement, and its qualifications and renewal requirements are different.
Recipients of the ECA will receive:
$4,000 per academic year
$1,000 per year for on-campus housing
$1,000 Education Abroad Voucher for use toward an approved education abroad program.
To be eligible for the ECA, students should “have a demonstrated interest in and/or commitment to recognizing the needs in one’s community.” Comparatively, the Inclusive Excellence Award stated more explicit criteria for students, saying they should “have an interest in and/or commitment to working with diverse individuals and/or groups (e.g. age, disability status, socioeconomic class, veteran status, nationality, race, sex, indigenous-status, LGBTQIA+ status, ESL speakers, and/or religion) to promote principles of equity and inclusion.”
According to the statement, the funds used for the Inclusive Excellence Scholarship are now reallocated for the ECA. Students eligible for renewal of their Inclusive Excellence Scholarship will not lose their scholarship money. The statement also says the ECA was automatically awarded to Inclusive Excellence Scholarship recipients.
“While the Inclusive Excellence Scholarship focused on connecting students from a variety of experiences and backgrounds, the Engaged Citizen Award is focused on helping students develop leadership skills while making positive contributions to our community,” the statement says.
Recipients of the scholarship who are non-Missouri residents will be awarded with a full waiver of out-of-state-fees. Like the Inclusive Excellence Award, the ECA requires students to be first-generation or come from a low-income background.
The Inclusive Excellence Scholarship awarded students with $2,500 each semester, totaling to $5,000 for one academic year. It was renewable for an additional three years after a student’s freshman year.
The statement also addressed questions relating to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and how the scholarship is being marketed to students.
“Both scholarships are/were open to all Missouri State students,” the statement says.
The MSU website page for the Inclusive Excellence Scholarship application redirects users to the Engaged Citizen Award application.
On Wednesday, Jan. 29, MSU effectively immediately stopped DEI programs and efforts. Current Inclusive Excellence Scholarship recipients were notified via email the same day that their scholarship would not be revoked due to the university’s DEI changes.
