Anne Arundel County residents Bryson and Carol Popham have established a scholarship fund at their alma mater, McDaniel College, through a $160,000 gift commitment. The initiative will benefit eligible graduates of Glen Burnie High School (GBHS) who apply for admission to the college.
The scholarship program, starting in the 2025-26 academic year, will award up to four $10,000 annual scholarships to students, with preference given to those pursuing education majors or minors. The scholarships are renewable for up to $40,000 over four years.
The fund honors Bryson Popham’s mother, Mildred Popham, who taught at Ferndale Elementary School in Glen Burnie from the early 1950s to the 1970s. Her dedication to teaching inspired the family’s focus on supporting education through this program.
“My mother was a great teacher, and teaching runs in our family’s genes,” said Bryson Popham. “Almost everyone remembers a teacher who made a positive difference in their lives, and that was certainly true of Mildred Popham.”
Bryson, a lawyer and lobbyist based in Annapolis, and Carol, a social worker with the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services, hope the program will make a meaningful impact on students’ lives and careers.

The scholarship reflects a collaborative effort between McDaniel College and Glen Burnie High School. GBHS counselors have already visited McDaniel’s campus, and the Pophams presented the program to GBHS faculty in September. The couple remains actively involved, championing the initiative and fostering the partnership between the two institutions.
“Carol and I are deeply grateful for the enthusiastic response from both McDaniel and Glen Burnie High School,” Bryson Popham said. “We believe it will be successful, and we will continue our efforts to assure its success.”
