Each year the Dalton Little Theatre generously awards three scholarships to area high school graduates. Each of the scholarships has a specific focus. For 2024, all three scholarships were awarded to graduates of the Northwest Whitfield High School Drama Program (also known as the Northwest Theatre Company). They are Sydney Ledford, Scarlett Mumford and Tristyn Sutton.
The scholarships are awarded to eligible candidates in Dalton, Murray County and Whitfield County high schools. Students must complete a detailed application that includes essays and teacher recommendations. In addition, the candidates must illustrate their involvement in high school theater and local community venues.
Ledford is the recipient of the J. Forrest Ovbey Memorial Scholarship. This award is given to a student for their outstanding work onstage and/or backstage.
Mumford is the recipient of the Keith McDearis Musical Theatre Scholarship. This honor is for a graduating senior who is an outstanding musical theater performer.
Sutton is the recipient of the Jimmy Nations Theatre Education Scholarship. This award is for an outstanding performer who will attend college to pursue a career in fine arts or language arts education.
In addition to the DLT, there are several community theaters in the region. With so many venues, students have ample opportunities to be involved in live theater. All three scholarship recipients began performing in community theaters as very young kids. They continued to work at the DLT and other area theaters while also producing outstanding work at Northwest.
The award-winning Northwest Theatre Company provides a disciplined study of the performing arts. Students develop essential life skills by performing in shows, participating in speech and drama competitions, and producing community outreach projects. This focus on the practical, real-world applications of theater can help every student achieve success in any career they choose. The DLT scholarships honor these students and the Northwest Theatre Company’s commitment to excellence.
