Over $50,000 in scholarships are now available from the Fall River Scholarship Foundation, it was announced Monday by James Rogers, president of the Foundation. The scholarships are available to both high school and college students who are Fall River residents or attend school in Fall River.
Applications for the Fall River Scholarship Foundation are now available from the guidance departments of Durfee and Diman Regional High School and on the Foundation website, www.fallriverscholarship.com. Completed applications must be received by April 1. Since the Foundation was established in 1995, it has awarded over $900,000 in scholarships to local students.
James Rogers has appointed Matthew Kuss as chairperson of the awards committee. He will be assisted by Dr. Philip Silvia, Thomas Coury, Caroline Moran, Matthew Moran, Andrew Nasser and Attorney John Saulino.
Last year, Anthony Cordeiro was recognized as the Person of the Year for his continuing work on education projects. Previous speakers have included State Senator Michael Rodrigues, Marc Megna, former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, Lynne Sullivan, the editor of the Herald News, Chanel 5 reporter Rhondella Richardson, Kim Moniz, vice-president of the Fall River Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Philip Silvia, history professor at Bridgewater University, Congressman Barney Frank, former Representative Kevin Aguiar, Bob Ryan, Boston Globe sportswriter, Mayor Edward Lambert, Dean Donald Howard from UMass Dartmouth, Tom Ellis, Cable news anchorman, Steve Burton, Channel 4 sports announcer, and the late Providence Mayor, Vincent (Buddy) Cianci.
Arrangements for a $1,000 scholarship as a memorial or honorary tribute may be made by contacting Rogers today at jimanddee@comcast.net. Donors may present their scholarship to the recipient at the Awards Ceremony in June.
The Fall River Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c) 3 foundation recognized by the Internal Revenue Service and was the recipient of the 2019 John S. Brayton, Jr. Community Service Award.
