Rice University recently hosted a reception where scholarship recipients and their donors met one-on-one to demonstrate that every dollar awarded is money well spent. Professors, donors and community leaders gathered at Cohen House where the university’s leadership and students underscored the long-lasting impact of charitable giving for higher education. More than 600 endowed scholarships are awarded to Rice undergraduate students each year.
“Each and every student at Rice, no matter their financial circumstance, should have the same opportunities and live up to the full potential for the one-of-a-kind, incredibly unique Rice experience,” said Amy Dittmar, the Howard R. Hughes Provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “From the generosity of so many donors in this room and elsewhere, undergraduate students get to participate in research experiences regardless of their financial circumstances.”
During a memorable moment of the reception, Sid Richardson College senior Megan McDonald, who received a Trustee Distinguished Scholarship, gave a heartfelt speech about how her award made the choice to attend Rice an attainable one.
“I can say, without a doubt, this scholarship is why I attended Rice,” McDonald said. “It’s why I can graduate debt free, and it’s why my life is changed for the better over the past four years. Rice provides its students the opportunity to explore the path less traveled, and I’m grateful that my scholarship allowed me to take that first, life-changing step forward.”
