Motorcycle, car, and slingshot enthusiasts are gearing up for the "Chilly" Chili Poker Run this Saturday in Jacksonville. The event, sponsored by Rolling Thunder North Carolina Chapter 5, aims to support veterans and POW-MIA initiatives while raising funds for the Staff Sergeant Anthony Goodwin Memorial Scholarship Program.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Lejeune Motorsports. Participants can look forward to cash prizes, door prizes, auction items, and complimentary bowls of chili for each rider.
Bryan Dent, president of Rolling Thunder NC-5, emphasized the impact of the scholarships. "A majority of time – a lot of people think $1,000 or $1,500 isn't a lot of money, but each scholarship helps the students with buying their books, paying different fees, and we enjoy what we're doing," he said.
Paul Levesque, past president of Rolling Thunder NC-5, highlighted the event's competitive spirit. "Each participant has a chance to win $500 for the best poker hand played, $200 for the second best poker hand played, and $100 for the worst poker hand played, so it's a fun day," he said.
Organizers typically award five to seven scholarships annually, making the event a significant contributor to educational support for students.
