TEKOA – Family and friends of Jamie Ann Wilson are turning the tragic loss of a loved one into an opportunity to celebrate her life and legacy.
They are planning a future scholarship for Whitman County students pursuing a career in the Culinary Arts.
The scholarship is having funds raised with t-shirts which feature Wilson’s original artwork and state “Justice for Jamie.”
Wilson, 25, was found deceased due to strangulation in her Pullman residence on March 26, 2024.
Sammie Williams, a friend of Wilson, said she is working on the scholarship and future non-profit.
Williams said the scholarship will have a selection committee of chefs whom Williams and Wilson worked with.
“I have an old teacher of ours that wants to match the first $1,000,” said Williams.
The scholarship, which Williams plans to name JAW Memorial Scholarship, will go towards one student pursuing the Culinary Arts in Whitman County and will be given out once a year.
“I don’t want to go off of grades,” said Williams, adding she plans for the scholarship to go towards a student going into the industry, whether that is culinary arts or hospitality.
Williams said a major requirement for applicants would be to state what they plan to do with their degree.
“The idea was I just wanted to do something more positive,” said Williams, adding that she didn’t want Wilson to just be remembered as a victim of domestic violence, but for her culinary career.
The scholarship will be through a non-profit that Williams plans to start.
“Really, all I have left to do work with is getting the fundraising going,” she said.
In addition to fundraising with the t-shirts, Williams said the non-profit will have a few dinners to support the fundraising.
