University of Nebraska at Omaha students gather for a presentation on study abroad programs during the World Languages and Literature Open House on March 12.
The Department of World Languages and Literature opened its doors Wednesday, inviting students to learn more about language education at University of Nebraska at Omaha.
The department hosts an open house event every semester. This year, undergraduate students were invited to visit the Department of World Languages and Literature (WLL) offices in Arts and Sciences Hall room 301 on Wednesday, March 12. The open house ran from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Visiting students had the opportunity to connect with advisers and other students interested in language education. Material was also provided with details on the various majors and minors in WLL. French major Ari Vigue attended to build connections within the department.
“I get to meet new people,” Vigue said. “If anybody’s interested in the program, they can talk to people who are in it or who are also interested in it, and get to figure out if that it’s something they really want to pursue.”
Special informational presentations were held on scholarship opportunities and study abroad programs, the latter being brought to the department by the North American Language and Culture Assistants Program (NALCAP).
Cecelia Tocaimaza-Hatch, associate professor in Spanish Linguistics and WLL department chair, hopes the open house will continue to bring student interest to language education at UNO.
“Our students sometimes don’t know about the opportunities that are out there,” Tocaimaza-Hatch said. “We want to show them that learning a language can open up lots of opportunities.”
Snacks of chips, cookies and juice were set out for students to enjoy. To encourage engagement with WLL outside of campus, free lunch was offered for the first 15 visitors who followed the department on Instagram.
“Being able to connect with other people within the World Languages Department, getting to know the faculty, getting to know the different programs, it creates a more involved community effort,” Vigue said.
WLL will soon be hosting its annual Language Celebration for High School Students in the Milo Bail Student Center. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14.
More information about World Languages and Literature programs can be found at WLL’s webpage. Students are encouraged to monitor UNO’s events webpage for information on events across the university’s departments.
