The Adams State History Fair for high school students is scheduled for the end of January, and out of it will come college scholarships offered by the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.
“Our mission at the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area is to promote education regarding our local histories, traditions, and culture. We are excited to offer a unique opportunity and incentive for our local students to engage in these histories,” said Julie Chacon, executive director of the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.
“Our youth hold the key to preserving our local history for future generations, and we believe that these scholarship opportunities will engage and encourage our youth to uncover even more histories within the Heritage Area.”
The Adams State History Fair is slated for Monday, Jan. 27, with the theme “Rights and Responsibility in History.” Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area will award scholarships for students whose projects include history from the heritage area. Projects can relate to themes based on local history, traditions, and culture. Students can create documentaries, oral histories, papers and presentations based on a theme relating to the history of the heritage area, which encompasses Alamosa, Conejos, and Costilla Counties.
Previous winners have selected topics such as Fort Garland, Jack Dempsey, local religion, Chicano Movement, SPMDTU and agriculture.
