Seven high school seniors from the Halbur area have been named Halbur University scholarship winners. Seven high school seniors from the Halbur area have been named Halbur University scholarship winners. Seven Carroll High School and Kuemper Catholic High School 2024 graduates have earned Halbur University scholarships.
The scholarship winners were recognized Sunday morning, April 7, following Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur.
Each student will receive a $650 scholarship.
Scholarship winners, their parents, their high school and their college plans are:
Emily Hedman, daughter of Cory and Jill Hedman,, Carroll HIgh School, Des Moines Area Community College, veterinarian technician.
Emma Hoffman, daughter of Tony and Susie Hoffman, Carroll HIgh School, University of Northern Iowa, English.
Grace Hoffman, daughter of Justin and Ellen Hoffman, Kuemper Ctholic High School, Des Moines Area Community College, liberal arts.
Hailey Klocke, daughter of Matt and Ashley Klocke, Carroll High School,Western Iowa Tech Community College, agribusiness technology.
Kirsten Mescher, daughter of Pat and Wendy Mescher, Kuemper Catholic High School, —PCI Academy, cosmetology.
Macie Schlesner, daughter of Kristi Schlesner, Carroll High School, business.
Wyatt Snyder, son of Andy and Nancy Snyder, Carroll High School, Des Moines Area Community College, advanced manufacturing and welding.
The community started the scholarship program for its children in 1976, rallying around a fictional university that became a center of town pride.
William “Bill” Testroet’s love of the Halbur Community prompted him to establish a perpetual scholarship fund for high school seniors. This would provide financial aid for the future education of students residing in the Halbur area, and for the advancement of the Halbur Community.
Thanks to the community’s support, Halbur U. Scholarship Fund has awarded 333 scholarships since 1976 with a total value of $163,650.
Students in the Halbur community are encouraged to take pride in and earn their HU scholarship by actively volunteering their time and talent for the advancement of the community. Scholarships are awarded to Halbur-area graduating seniors who have completed a minimum of 20 hours of documented community service hours for the betterment of Halbur.
Each January the Halbur U. Bowling and Fun(d) night is held. The Halbur community has many generous citizens who donate and/or purchase auction items at this fundraiser to supply the money needed for the scholarships.
To be eligible for a scholarship, Halbur area seniors need to have a minimum of 20 volunteer service hours for the betterment of the Halbur community, (completed in the previous 4- 5 years.) This needs to be documented by a sponsored adult and include event, date, time, along with the total number of hours worked. Examples of Halbur activities include: Halbur Development Corporation-sponsored events; town cleanup; Halbur Fire Departmen., setup and cleanup for funerals and Halbur U Fun(d) night.
The students receive the scholarships after successfully completing their first term of post-high school education.
Halbur U Board of Deans members are Tim Hinners, John Loeffelholz, Lois Dentlinger, Julie Clancy, Lisa Eischeid, Frank Eischeid, Fay Halbur, Linda Bruch and Scott Rotert.
