PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – January is the time of year where students start preparing for post-secondary education.
Part of preparing includes applying for scholarships. Students are able to apply for scholarships through their high schools or desired colleges. Students can also go online to find scholarships.
For students in Ohio can find scholarships through Appalachian Ohio. The organization is made to help Ohio counties in the Appalachian region find financial aid for post-secondary education. They have scholarships that are specific to each county.
Linda Knopp, the Director of Communications and Marketing for Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, said students in Appalachia deserve the same opportunities as everyone else.
What we always say though is that we believe that the people of Appalachia have the same potential as the people anywhere. They just always haven’t had the same opportunities. So, the wonderful thing about these scholarships is it gives students a chance to pursue some additional opportunities they may not have had a chance to before.
Students in West Virginia can go to CFWV to find scholarships. Rather than scholarships being sorted by county, they go by desired field such as nursing or STEM. Students in the Parkersburg area can also go to the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation or the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation to find scholarships or grants.
Angela Evans, the Head Counselor at Parkersburg South High School, said it’s important for students to apply to as many scholarships as possible.
College has gotten very expensive. So, the more money they can receive in scholarships the more it’s going to defer the payment that they have to do. There’s so many scholarships that come through here that not many students apply for. So, the more that they’re aware of and the more applications complete, the better opportunities they have.
Angela advises students to apply to as many scholarships as possible regardless if you qualify or not. There are many scholarships that do not see many applications, thus resulting in a surplus of scholarship money not being awarded.
To apply for scholarships through Appalachian Ohio, you can visit their website and search for your county. To apply for scholarships through CFWV, you can visit their website.
