TEXARKANA, Texas – Texarkana’s Twin City Black History Association presented a prestigious scholarship based on the recipient’s educational success and aspiration to pursue a career in education.
Eighth-grader Kendall Washington was presented the Sandra Calloway Memorial Scholarship on Saturday morning at the 29th annual TCBHA brunch at Texarkana College.
Washington wrote an original poem, “It’s Just a Color,” that took first place in her school’s Slam Dunk Poetry Contest. She attends Christ Nations Church, studies in honors classes, is a member of the PEARLS Organization of the Kappa Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and participates in Texarkana’s The Scholars.
Her future endeavors include goals to attend an Ivy League school or an HBCU (a college initially set to educate African American descendants) and become an activist for civil rights.
The scholarship commemorates Calloway, a co-founder of TCBHA who hails from the Texarkana, Arkansas School District and Texarkana Texas ISD educators were present as well.
Each year, the association gives the award to a deserving student who aspires to start a career in the field of education.
TCBHA President Novella Medlock said the brunch’s goals were twofold.
One is to celebrate American Black history and secondly, the brunch raises money to give to the scholarship fund for next year for students in the Texarkana area.
“We take great pride in investing in the future, helping young leaders on their journey,” said Medlock.
Treasurer and Brunch Chair Rae Thigpen Parks said the applications are online, and an essay is also required to be considered for the scholarship.
The application also asks two questions on the application, asking, “Why do they want to attend college, and why do they think they deserve this scholarship.”
