Allen Park Elks Annual inside Garage Sale: 6601 Park Ave, Allen Park (corner of Park/Philomene). Sale is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Free admission. There will be crystals, collectibles, glassware, jewelry, homemade baked items, household, health/beauty, toys, purses/shoes/clothes, holiday items, school supplies, paper products, toys. There will be a lot of new and gently used items. There will be several vendors selling all of their wares. The Elks will also be having their own table and the profit from these items will be going to help Veterans and less fortunate members of the community.

Creative Writing Challenge: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. March 10, from 3-4 p.m. Calling all creative writers. We will meet at one of the front Community Rooms the second Monday of every month, from 3-4 p.m. Everyone will be given a prompt, and your job will be to take this prompt to find words on signs, pictures, artwork, book spines, overheard phrases/quotes, etc. on library grounds and write them down. Lego Club: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. March 10, 17, 24, 31, from 6-7 p.m. Do you love Legos? Join our Lego Club. Every Monday we will challenge you to make something relating to that week’s theme. We will display your creation for one week and will tear them apart at the next event. Textile Lab: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. March 11, 18, 25, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Textile Lab is a weekly lab for textile crafters to come together and work on their projects. If you love to quilt, sew, knit, crochet, embroider, needlepoint, or any other textile crafting, this is the place for you! Join this super low-key weekly book club where you show up with a book of your choice and read! At each meeting the first and last 15 minutes will be designated for sharing what you’re reading/socializing with other members and then the hour and half in-between will be designated for reading. March 13, from 6-7:30 p.m. T(w)een Book Club is a monthly book club suggested for tweens and teens ages 12-17 where we will read age-appropriate titles from all genres, have a snack, and do a book-related activity. Copies of our monthly book will be placed on hold and can be picked up from our front desk before our meeting. Most of the time they are also available on Hoopla or Libby. Drawing Comics: Child & Parent Art Challenge at the Bacon Memorial District Library, 45 Vinewood, Wyandotte, Thursday, March 20 at 4:45 p.m. Families, do you enjoy drawing? How about comic strips? Join Ronin and Lana, a child and parent duo, for an ongoing comic strip drawing club for youth and their caregivers on the third Thursday of each month. This monthly hour-long program allows children and their caregivers an opportunity to spend time practicing their art together with plenty of supplies, space, and also the support of others. Learn about the history of Comic Strips, how to create stories with humor and suspense, and how to publish your art. Get to know people in your community and share your creative side too. Deadline to Submit 2025 Bruce Jones Scholarship Applications (April 7): Sponsored by the Grosse Ile Nature Land Conservancy. High School seniors on Grosse Ile can apply for this scholarship by writing about their experiences working to protect our natural environment. Now is the perfect time for your high school student to complete some community service hours to protect our natural environment and then write about the experiences on the scholarship application. The deadline is Monday, April 7. Grosse Ile High School seniors should contact the Groose Ile High School Counseling Office for information, application form, and submission. Scholarship: The Creative Art Society (CAS) announced the opening of the 2025 Visual Arts Scholarship Awards for young artists in Downriver communities. The CAS Visual Arts Scholarship Awards offer prizes, including up to $750 for first place, while second place will earn $500 and a third-place recipient will receive $250. The competition is open to artists specializing in a wide range of visual arts, including painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and even artistic welding. This scholarship is open to high school seniors and college students from the Downriver area who are pursuing or planning to pursue an education in visual arts. The deadline to apply is April 7. The announcement of the winners is April 15. Awards presentation is April 25 during the Art Ambience Fine Art Exhibit Opening at the Woodhaven Community Center. Turn the Multipurpose Room into the Bacon Dragway using the library’s collection of Hot Wheels. Family Programs: Intro to 3D Printing: Keychains is Thursday, March 6 at 5 p.m. Ages 8 & up: Interested in 3D printing or design? Come check out our Makerspace’s 3D printer! We will be using the free and easy-to-use TinkerCAD to create your custom keychains. Our staff will guide you through the process of using TinkerCAD, where you will learn how to add text, shapes, and other details to the design before it is printed out. Adult/High School Programs: Making at Bacon: Sandwich Bread is Tuesday, March 11 at 5 p.m. Explore bread making and learn some basic techniques to start your baking journey! Participants will learn about yeast, kneading, and what goes into a loaf of bread. This program involves flour, so participants should dress accordingly. Soups and Salutes: Fundraiser hosted by VFW Post and Auxiliary #4422 in Taylor. This event, happening at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Homemade soups and chilis, raffles, music, and more will be served. The fundraiser supports veterans’ services, youth programs, and community outreach efforts. In addition to the fundraiser, the VFW will take a moment to recognize community volunteers, patriotic citizens, and businesses that make a difference. Vietnam War veterans in attendance will also receive Vietnam War Commemoration Lapel Pins, presented by the Sons and Daughters of the Vietnam War. The Creative Art Society: Meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11 at the Southgate Veterans Memorial Library in the City of Southgate, 14680 Dix-Toledo Highway. Free and open to the public. Special guest will be Judy Curry, who paints impressionistic landscape, floral, and still life works, mostly in watercolor. In the past year, she has taken on the challenge of a new medium, gouache, and loves to learn it while sketching and painting outdoors. About the presenter: Mary Spencer has been a culinary instructor for over 20 years. Sewing for Jesus: Come join us and help make dresses for girls in need worldwide. Even if you do not sew, you can come and cut bias tape that is sewn around the armhole of the dresses. Stay Sharp Kits & Pet Companions: At the Trenton Veterans Memorial Library. Stay Sharp Kits are a wonderful resource for adults (and the caregivers of adults) who are experiencing memory loss and other cognitive issues related to dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory disorders. These themed kits are filled with a variety of materials and activities that have been designed to promote cognitive skills. Some activities focus more on conversation and socializing, others on motor skills and critical thinking. Well-Read Wanderers: At the Trenton Veterans Memorial Library. A Book Club for 3rd-, 4th-, & 5th-graders. Meets on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Every month we will meet to discuss and start reading a new book. We will learn some of the basic elements of a book (i.e. plot, characters etc.), so that we have a greater understanding of what we read. Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed: The Senior Alliance has partnered with the Wayne County Department of Senior Services to discover what drives you to volunteer and meet an immediate need for volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels. Heart to Heart Hospice Volunteers needed: Heart to Heart Hospice is looking for downriver community members to join the group’s team of volunteers, who will visit with patients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to help increase their quality of life during their final days. Visits can provide friendship, compassion and distraction from their prognosis. Activities that clients might enjoy are being read to, watching television together, talking about who and where they’ve been, their families, hearing about your day, playing cards, and so much more.
