Sen. David Tikoian, in what he says is “the true spirit of public service,” is again donating a portion of his legislative salary back to the community.
Last January, Tikoian established the “Senator David P. Tikoian Leadership Scholarship”, and this January doubled down on the initiative with scholarship awards totaling $1,500.
The annual $1,500 scholarship is given to graduating high school students within Rhode Island Senate District 22, representing Smithfield, North Providence and Lincoln, who exhibit strong school-based or community-based leadership.
Recipients of the award embody the characteristics of service to their community, dedication to improving the quality of life of those around them, and civic responsibility.
Three scholarships of $500 each will be awarded to a deserving senior from Smithfield, North Providence, and Lincoln high schools. Each school district’s guidance staff select a graduating senior enrolled in an accredited college or university.
“I make a concerted effort to lead by example and give back to a community that has provided so much for so many,” said Tikoian in a statement. “Keeping that philosophy in mind, and understanding being an elected official is public service, it’s very fulfilling to donate a portion of my legislative salary back to the community in a meaningful, impactful, and perpetual manner. I can’t think of a better way to accomplish that goal, than to continue a scholarship which benefits the youth and future leaders of our community.”
The 2024 recipients were Jacob Kamborian, of Lincoln High School, Shannon Fillmore, of North Providence High School, and Courtney Ayrassian, of Smithfield High School.
