The United Nations (UN) Graduate Study Programme (GSP) at UN Geneva is an unparalleled educational initiative, marking its 62nd year in 2024. Over the years, it has become a beacon for young minds worldwide, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the intricacies of international relations, diplomacy, and the workings of the United Nations. In this blog, we will explore the significance of the 62nd GSP, its focus on the “Summit of the Future,” and the enriching experiences it provides to its participants.
The 62nd GSP and the Summit of the Future:
Scheduled to take place from 1 to 12 July 2024 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, the 62nd GSP revolves around the theme “Summit of the Future: Challenges and Opportunities.” This thematic emphasis aligns with the upcoming Summit of the Future at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22-23 September 2024. The summit is considered a pivotal event, offering a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen global cooperation, address critical challenges, and reinvigorate the multilateral system.
Structure and Highlights of the 62nd GSP:
The programme encompasses a diverse range of activities, including morning lectures by UN representatives, diplomats, and experts from various sectors. Participants will engage in visits to institutions, group projects, and research, focusing on the five chapters of the “Pact for the Future.” These chapters cover sustainable development and financing, international peace and security, science and technology, youth and future generations, and transforming global governance. The immersive experience is designed to be student-led and student-owned, fostering a dynamic learning environment. Participants, divided into working groups, will present their findings in short papers and presentations, contributing to the ongoing discourse on global challenges and opportunities.
Application Process and Eligibility:
The 62nd GSP is open to currently enrolled graduate students aged 22 to 32, fluent in both written and spoken English, and not employed full-time. The application process is open from 11 December 2023 to 1 March 2024, with decisions communicated to applicants on 1 April 2024. The Selection Committee evaluates academic qualifications, extracurricular activities, professional experience, and motivation, ensuring a fair gender and regional balance.
Expenses and Commitment:
While participation in the programme is free, participants are responsible for covering their expenses, including visa, travel, board, and lodging in Geneva. The programme demands a substantial time commitment, with an average of 8-10 hours per day over ten intensive days.
