TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Millions of students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. And there’s a nonprofit organization in Toledo that helps them navigate the application process.
It’s called Toledo Tomorrow. The nonprofit organization helps students get to the next step after high school. Financial aid and scholarship applications are a big part of that process. And there are some important deadlines coming up.
“We helped students in the greater Toledo area connect with millions of dollars last year. Literacy and education determine opportunities,” Bob Savage, the president of Toledo Tomorrow, said.
The goal of Toledo Tomorrow is to get students where they want to go after high school graduation with as little debt as possible. That can be skilled trades, career tech or college. And FAFSA applications are a big part of that process.
“For any grant or scholarship for college, you need to fill out a FAFSA form. Even if you’re recruited for UT or Ohio State to play a sport, you have to fill out the form to receive that aid,” Savage said.
Savage said Toledo Tomorrow helps about 1,400 students a year. That help includes going into schools and talking to students about career tech, college and skilled trade options, as well as taking them on college or company tours. There’s no cost to students or their families to get help from the organization and there’s a huge payoff.
“Studies show that the average American who goes to college earns about $1 million more over the course of their life than those who just went to high school,” Savage said.
The FAFSA process has seen some big changes over the last year. There were some glitches but Savage said there have been no recent problems.
“There were some big changes last year and the beginning of this year to simplify it, and those changes cut the questions in half,” Savage said.
In many cases, the FAFSA application deadline is right around the corner.
“There are big scholarship deadlines, especially need-based scholarships coming up. Those deadlines at UT and BGSU are coming up next week. The amount of money you can get if you go through the process is significant,” Savage said.
Savage said the work of Toledo Tomorrow is a formula that pays dividends for the entire community.
“We’re here to help everybody, we want to level the playing field. Every student, no matter where they grew up or what their family looks like, we’re here to help,” Savage said.
Even though the latest application deadline is fast approaching in many cases, it is not too late to ask for help from Toledo Tomorrow. If you’d like to learn more about the work of the organization, click here.
Toledo Tomorrow offers sessions throughout the school year and during the summer months.
