PARSONS — The Tucker Community Foundation has announced the start of their annual scholarship season. This year’s deadline is Friday, March 7 at 3 p.m. The Foundation encourages every student to complete and return their application as early as possible.
The Tucker Community Foundation has more than 45 scholarship funds available for high school and college students in Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph, Tucker and Upshur Counties, WV and Garrett County, MD. Scholarship awards will range from $500 to $10,000 with most in the $1,000 to $2,000 range. Last year the Tucker Community Foundation awarded over $109,000 in scholarships to deserving students in our 9-county service area.
Students can go to www.tuckerfoundation.net to download an application and view the list of scholarships. Scholarship applications are available now, and the deadline to apply is Friday, March 7.
Applications are also available at the Foundation offices located in the Board of Education Annex at 100 Education Lane, Parsons. High School guidance counselors throughout the Foundation’s service area also have applications for distribution to students.
Chief Financial Officer Michael Moore encourages all high school and college students to apply even if their educational needs do not align with a particular scholarship fund.
“Some of the Tucker Community Foundation’s scholarships are designated for graduates of a particular high school or for a particular college while others are based on activities or intended college majors” Moore said. “Just because you do not qualify for one scholarship does not mean you would not qualify for another. We review all the scholarship applications and determine the student’s eligibility for each different scholarship. One application covers all our scholarship funds”
New this year is the Louanna Bava Carr Memorial Scholarship, which provides a yearly scholarship to a deserving female athlete from Tucker County High School that will be attending college or trade school in the fall.
Also new this year, the Damien White Memorial Scholarship will provide a yearly scholarship to a deserving Elkins High School graduating senior able to demonstrate financial need and has maintained a GPA of 2.5 or above that is planning to pursue a four-year degree, two-year degree or trade school certification. The student can attend any school with any area of study. The scholarship will be renewable for up to 4 years at $1,000 per year.
This scholarship was created in honor of Damien White a graduate of Elkins High School. He passed away from Glioblastoma in 2023 at only 45 years old. He left behind a legacy of determination, humor, resiliency, loyalty, service to others, and kindness.
Postgraduate college students from Tucker, Preston or Garrett counties who are pursuing a masters, doctorate or professional degree are eligible for a Crimson Shamrock Scholarship.
The Gary Wilson Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship for Tucker County students attending a Christian elementary, middle or high school, or who are being home schooled employing Christian educational principles and values.
These are just a handful of the more than 45 scholarships available from the Tucker Community Foundation this year.
High school seniors, college students, students attending technical schools and other non-traditional students (e.g., adults returning to school) are encouraged to apply for a Tucker Community Foundation scholarship regardless of their field of study.
The Tucker Community Foundation manages more than 150 endowed funds providing annual scholarships and grants to nonprofits and charitable causes throughout their nine-county service area. Inspired by the flood of 1985, the mission of the Foundation is “Creating opportunities for the individuals and communities we serve.”
