BELTON, Texas — Two Central Texas high school seniors have officially been named National Merit Finalists, a recognition that places them among the nation’s most accomplished students.
Belton ISD announced the selection of Belton High School seniors Steven Melo Arantes and David Shelburne in a press release on Friday.
Arantes and Shelburne advance to Finalist status after being named semifinalists in Sept. 2024. National Merit Finalists are students who best demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership and dedication to their education.
The National Merit Scholarship Program awards approximately 7,500 scholarships annually, providing significant financial support for college-bound students.

Melo Arantes shares his excitement about the honor.
“Being named a National Merit Finalist is truly rewarding. The process—from preparing for the PSAT to writing college essays—was challenging but helped me grow,” he said. “My advice to younger students is to start early, stay consistent, and apply yourself in every class.”
Shelburne attributes his success to studying year-round, even during the summer.
“It feels great to see my hard work pay off. My family has been incredibly supportive, and this recognition opens doors to scholarship opportunities,” Shelburne stated.
Belton High School Principal Claudia Knox applauded Melo Arantes and Shelburne.
“They balance academics, leadership, and athletics, proving students can excel in all areas. Their achievement shows that involvement in extracurriculars and academic excellence go hand in hand,” Knox said.
Belton ISD Superintendent Dr. Malinda Golden acknowledged the high school’s role in supporting Melo Arantes and Shelburne and students like them.
“With resources like Tiger Time tutoring, study groups, and clubs, our staff supports students in reaching their full potential,” Knox said.
Final designations for National Merit Finalists will be announced nationwide in April.
