During its annual Awards Night last month, Yelm Dollars for Scholars (YDFS) awarded more than a hundred scholarships to graduating seniors during its Awards Night on June 4 .
A total of $154,300 in scholarships were distributed among 117 scholarships, including 23 YDFS Preferred Scholarships and 94 YDFS General Scholarships, helping students pursue higher education.
The General scholarship process requires students to complete an application through Scholarship America by the end of February each year, followed by brief and in-person interviews.
The application assesses GPA, community service, school activities, work experiences, and special circumstances and includes an essay on goals and aspirations.
While following the same application process, preferred scholarships have donor-specific criteria, such as field of study, school attendance, GPA, or participation in sports or clubs.
Recipients are selected based on how well they meet the donor’s criteria and overall score.
YDFS funds these scholarships through various initiatives and fund-raising events, including the Crossroads Pumpkin Patch, the Taste of the Prairie event, and the Annual Dinner and Auction.
Contributions also come from memorials, wills, individual sponsorships, employee deductions from Yelm Community Schools staff, and direct donations from community members.
“We are incredibly proud to support our graduating seniors as they embark on their educational journeys,” said Dan Huttmann, Board President at Yelm Dollars for Scholars. “The community’s unwavering generosity ensures that these students can achieve their academic goals and build a brighter future.”
Established in 1991, Yelm Dollars for Scholars is a non-profit organization supported by the community that provides educational scholarships to senior students pursuing higher education.
