Scholarship season has officially taken off at Madison College. Applications for the upcoming spring semester are open and awaiting your submissions.
The Madison College Foundation distributes more than $20 million in scholarships. Over a thousand students take advantage of that every year, resulting in a long—yet extremely rewarding—process.
“We offer workshops to students so they can feel more confident in their writing skills,” says Ruth Shoup, one of the many volunteers tasked with reviewing the applications. “They receive judgments and can make corrections in real-time. We collaborate with the Writing Center, so that way students looking for help don’t have to travel far in order to get it.”
This is the second semester these workshops have been offered, and they typically have a very small turnout. Despite the high number of applications sent in, most see an average of ten students per session. This allows for much quicker feedback from the Writing Center, and students don’t need to worry about performing well in front of crowds.
School is hard enough, and other obligations can really weigh a person down. These workshops are meant to reach as many students as possible so that those in need of financial support can find them.
“You shouldn’t think that you can’t do it,” says Shoup. “If you apply yourself and put in the effort, you have a great shot at winning something.”
Madison College also offers an exceptions list meant for students who can’t meet scholarship deadlines. When circumstances outside of their control keep them from participating, people like Shoup are here to help. “Commonly, students don’t know if they’re accepted into their program yet,” she says. “But sometimes, they’re facing other challenges in their life. Whatever the issue, I work with them one-on-one to see what ways I can help.”
Madison College prides itself on providing its students support at every possible instance. If you seek out their help, you will be rewarded.
