In October, the Humboldt Education Foundation (HEF) awarded $5,000 to 11 teachers in eight schools within the Humboldt Unified School District. HEF started awarding classroom grants in the 2019-20 school year to address classroom needs. That year, HEF gave a $6000 total award over three school semesters.

This semester, HEF was able to give $ 2,500 for classroom grants and $ 2,500 for PE/athletic grants, for a total of $5000.  The additional funds for PE/Athletic grants were courtesy of Dignity Health. ‘Donations and sponsorship are given from the hospitals’ operating budgets to non-profit organizations for defined purposes that address community health needs.’ (Dignity Health) Grant requests were from basketball uniforms at Coyote Springs Elementary to Math Manipulatives for second grade at Lake Valley Elementary and instruments in the music room at Liberty Traditional School.

President Aimee Flemming said, “The need for grants was high this quarter as we had 39 applicants between the two grant cycles totaling just under $17,000.”

A grant winner, Kari Ingerson, a drama and stage craft teacher, said, “I was so surprised. I know there was a lot of competition. When the HEF team walked in with the humongous check and balloons, my students were so excited.” Mrs. Ingerson’s award will be used for Project Vinyl Heat Transfer, which will allow students to create costumes for the Bradshaw Mountain High School Theatrical Troupe.

Fleming said, “HEF loves supporting our teachers, staff, and students and only wishes we could approve all the grant applications.”

Since that first year, HEF has applied for grants and received donations from local developers, businesses, and individuals. The source of ongoing money is from the Foundation’s Teacher of the Year Banquet. This is a heartwarming event where HEF honors teachers from each of the HUSD schools who have been nominated by their students. Since HEF is a completely volunteer-based board, 100% of sponsorship funds go back into schools for teacher classroom grants and to give high school students scholarships to college.
The Humboldt Education Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an approved State of Arizona Qualifying Charitable Organization for Arizona Tax Credit program.
