Chardon High School student Tallon Rice’s entrepreneurial talents were on display as he was named a top five finalist in Lakeland Community College’s Dollars for Dreams competition on Nov. 11.
The competition was open to all Lakeland students and Tallon, who pitched his business Fire and Ice Pretzels, was the only high school student to be chosen as a top five finalist. Tallon, a junior at CHS, is a Lakeland student by virtue of his enrollment in College Credit Plus business classes taught by Mr. Al Herner.
“I am proud of Tallon’s poise and professionalism in presenting his business in front of so many people, including the high-profile judges,” Mr. Herner said.
Tallon has been developing his pretzel business since he was in second grade. He uses an original recipe created by his grandfather.
Tallon credits his mother as his biggest supporter throughout his business journey.
Through the competition, Tallon was awarded a cash prize of $375 as well as a membership to the Willoughby and Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce. He plans to put the prize money back into his business and plans to use the chamber membership as a tool for networking and access to facilities to grow the business.
Eleven Chardon High School seniors have been awarded $20,000 scholarships to be used at colleges and universities throughout the state of Ohio through the Governor’s Merit Scholarship program.
The scholarship, through the Ohio Department of Higher Education, provides up to $5,000 per year for four years of full-time education at a public or private, nonprofit college or university in Ohio.
The program rewards high school students who achieve outstanding academic success—ranking in the top 5% of their class—and encourages them to continue their education in Ohio.
The CHS students who earned the scholarship based on their weighted GPAs are: Caroline Evans, Riley Ford, Grayson Hallam, Cash Johnson, Abby Kolcum, Elaina Mardula, Lillian Meyer, Connor Mosher, Jacob Nieset, Katelyn Silk and Robert Silk.
Students at Munson Elementary, Park Elementary and Chardon Early Learning Center spent the month of October collecting thousands of pairs of socks to be donated towards good causes.
The three schools collected the new pairs of socks to be donated to Geauga County Job and Family Services. CELC also sent a special shipment to Western North Carolina.
In total, Park collected 1,913 pairs of socks; CELC collected 1,236 pairs of socks; and Munson collected 685 pairs of socks.
