MOREHEAD CITY — Two top West Carteret High School (WCHS) seniors are recipients of highly coveted Morehead-Cain Scholarships to attend UNC Chapel Hill.
Cameron Johnson of Morehead City and Ansley Jones of Pine Knoll Shores received the prestigious awards, which provide four-year, fully funded scholarships to attend UNC Chapel Hill. Scholarships cover tuition, room and board, and offer summer enrichment and extracurricular learning experiences.
Selection criteria for the Morehead-Cain include scholarship, leadership, character and physical vigor. The scholarship is worth an estimated $80,000, according to StudentScholarships.org.
Both students said they were honored to receive the prestigious awards.
“Words can’t describe how excited I am to be attending UNC as a Morehead-Cain Scholar. It is a dream come true,” Johnson said. “Being a Morehead Scholar, I will be able to be in a program that pushes me to grow my leadership skills. I am really excited about the summer opportunities. This summer, through Outward Bound, I will be sailing and rock climbing in Maine for 22 days.”
Johnson will double major in mathematics and economics and is not yet decided on the career he will pursue.
Jones, too, said she was excited to receive such an esteemed award.
“I am indescribably excited about the scholarship because it’s providing me the opportunity to pursue things I’ve always wanted to do — explore my varied interests, travel around the world, and graduate debt-free,” she said.
Jones will major in environmental science, with plans to work in environmental field research and conservation.
A brief look at the biographical information on these two student leaders leaves no doubt they are deserving of the notable scholarships.
Johnson serves as WCHS Student Body President and has been a member of the Student Government Association since his sophomore year. He has also been a member of the Youth and Government Club at West Carteret, and this year serves as president of his delegation. He served as Chief Justice for the state conference that was held in February at the Raleigh Convention Center.
Johnson has been involved in competitive swimming since he was 4 years old. He has been on the WCHS swim team throughout his high school career. He served as team captain his junior and senior seasons. He has earned a state championship, been state runner-up and has numerous top-10 state finishes during his high school years.
An active member of the youth group at First Methodist Church in Morehead City, Johnson plays keyboard in the worship band.
As for Jones, a passionate environmentalist, she also makes time for sports. She’s participated in soccer, tennis and cross country, and served as the captain of the cross country team in the fall. In addition, she takes part in several clubs, including the school’s Student Ecology Association, which she founded and led for three years. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society and the WCHS Inner Peace Society, which is a mental health club.
With her love for environmental science, Jones has several dozen shrimp and snails she keeps in an aquarium. She’s also been an active Scout for many years.
Jones is a member of the choir at St. Egbert Catholic Church in Morehead City. She is also a member of a community band, where she plays alto saxophone.
Her parents are Neil and Jennifer Jones of Pine Knoll Shores.
