For the first time in the history of the Show-Me Scholars & Tech Masters program, the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce awarded scholarships to all Rolla High School students who met the criteria for distinction
That meant setting a record for total dollar amount of $74,000, exceeding their $50,000 goal. Seventy-four students received $1,000 scholarships. Local businesses and community members funded the scholarships. Additionally, raffle tickets were sold for a Honda Pioneer 700 side-by-side donated by Bluefish Screen Printing and Design of Rolla and Ed Morse power sports in St. Robert.
For nearly two decades, the Show-Me Scholars and Tech Masters program has provided Rolla students with a track for academic and career success. The program is a course of study that encourages students to take more demanding classes in high school to better prepare them to enter a four-year college, community college, technical school, apprenticeship, military or the work force. The program is a joint effort of the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce, Rolla Public School district and the local business community.
Chamber Executive Director Stevie Kearse explains that the program is a comprehensive model for success.
“Every student has a different track . . . they might be college bound or planning to enter trade school, the workforce, or military. Whatever their path, Show-Me Scholars helps prepare them because it’s not just about academics,” she said. “It’s about having good attendance, good conduct in school and volunteering in your community.”
Each student is required to have 50 hours of community service over the course of their high school career. Each year in April, the chamber awards scholarships to students who have met the criteria of the program. In the past, scholarships were randomly selected, so not all students received them. This is the first year all students were given a scholarship. The students also receive a cord and medallion to wear during the RHS graduation ceremony.
The scholarships can be used for traditional higher education expenses, but those who are not college bound can use their scholarship funds to purchase equipment or items needed for their trade.
The Rolla Show-Me Scholars program is the last of its kind in Missouri. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry started the program in 2009, asking local chambers to carry out the program in their communities. According to Kearse, Rolla’s efforts were considered the best in the state for many years and so the chamber continued to promote the program.
“To my knowledge, we are the only community that has Show-Me Scholars & Tech Masters,” Kearse said.
Chamber foundation director Kevin Greven is proud of the success of Show-Me Scholars.
“We have a great team of volunteers on our education committee that helps the whole program throughout the whole school year,” he said. “To keep the program in the forefront of the students’ minds, we participate in the enrollment fair and college night, for example. Also, a couple times a year we go and we take or we hand out cookies at the lunch breaks at the high school. It’s just a wonderful program and we appreciate the school for working with us on it and we love the business community and all of the citizens that are making donations to the scholarship fund.”

Q. What’s the difference between a noise and a sound?
There’s a meme that circulates on social media every year about this time. It asks the question “St. Patrick’s Day lasts 10 days?” Followed with “You must be from Rolla.”
