Palmer Lake has a thriving arts community. Those artists take pride in recognizing and assisting young artists on the rise.
The Palmer Lake Art Group announced the winners of the D-38 Art Scholarships, which are bestowed by the group’s members and community sponsors.
The 2024 recipients are:
First Place: Cavan Porter, Palmer Ridge HS, $1,500
Second Place: Marian Griffiths, Palmer Ridge HS, $1,000
Third Place Emily Osborne, Lewis-Palmer HS, $500
“Our purpose for creating this scholarship is to assist young, talented artists to continue their studies in art and pursue a career in an art related field,” Palmer Lake Art Group President Kathleen Seelye said.
Judging by the reaction of the recipients, that mission is being accomplished.
“The part about art that excites me the most is the possibility and potential a blank canvas, page, or any material has to become something great and express so much on its own,” said Porter, who will be attending Pikes Peak State College. “All it takes is a person with a dream and the want to create.”
Griffiths, who will be attending Brigham Young University, and Graves, who is heading to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln expressed similar sentiments.
“In my mind, to make art is to notice and understand the world around you,” Griffiths said. “In order to capture the intricate beauty of something, you have to understand how the parts work together to create the hole.”
“The one medium that I have spent more time on would be acrylic painting, the textures and what seems to be infinite colors I could make are always breathtaking to me,” Graves said. “I plan on focusing mainly on this form but I will continue to explore my many other options of art.”
The group started in November of 1965 as a small group of artists in Palmer Lake, according to Seelye. It has grown over the past 40 years and now has members throughout the Pikes peak region.
The group has been awarding scholarships since 1977. Since then, about $87,000 in art scholarships has been awarded to graduating D-38 seniors planning to continue in their study of the arts.
