Ramona High School senior Karlee Larzalere-Higuera is one of 26 students in San Diego County to receive a total of $83,000 in Don Diego college scholarships this year.
Larzalere-Higuera, 17, is receiving a $1,500 Junior Livestock Auction scholarship. She said she plans to apply the scholarship toward her major in animal science at the University of Arizona. She will study at the university’s College of Agriculture Life and Environmental Sciences Department.
Larzalere-Higuera said she was inspired to pursue a career in agriculture by her Ramona High ag teachers Mary and Curtis Martineau.
“I chose this major because my ag classes inspired me to become a livestock veterinarian,” she said.
Don Diego Chairman Stephen Shewmaker describes the recipients as “exceptional.”
“Individually, our Class of 2024 Scholars are driven to make their community and the world a better place,” he said. “Together, they embody the quintessential attributes of a Don Diego Scholar. We are delighted to help propel them on their amazing life journeys.”
The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors chose the scholarship recipients from 89 applications that were submitted.
Larzalere-Higuera said her former FFA chapter president introduced her to Ramona’s FFA program and helped her meet new people in the program.
“I try to get as involved as I can,” she said. “FFA members meet so many people and have so many opportunities. It’s a great program.”
In the past, Larzalere-Higuera has shown swine and rabbits at the San Diego County Fair but this year she plans to show a heifer.
She said she was surprised to be awarded the Don Diego Scholarship.
“I was very shocked because I knew there were a lot of people running for the scholarship,” she said. “A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes.”
The Scholars will be celebrated at Don Diego’s June 13 Gala and Old Dominion Concert at the San Diego County Fair. Tickets for this limited-availability event are available online atdondiegoscholarship.org.
Don Diego annually offers college scholarships in various categories to students who reside in San Diego County and have participated in the San Diego County Fair and/or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
