UISD and Impacto Media announced scholarship and educational support funds this week raised throughout the latest school year.
Mike Garza — United Independent School District Associate Superintendent for Operations and Administration — hopes to see the collaboration to continue, as he has seen funds grow with the partnership between Impacto Media Inc. and UISD for placing advertisements on mini billboards on school grounds.
“Part of that requirement is that we get a percentage of those sales,” Garza said. “This partnership allowed us to get 30% of those sales in addition to them providing $20,000 in scholarships, specifically for the scholarship program we have internally. This is the first year we’ve had over $100,000 in educational support. We hope to reap the benefits of that partnership.”

Guillermo Montalvo, Director of Impacto Media Inc., was there to lend a hand in awarding the businesses that placed advertisements at all four UISD high school’s mini billboards.
According to Montalvo, the business may only grow as he said the businesses are continuing their partnerships and staying, and the school district is attaining the funds at only 50% capacity from the advertisements.
“He’s got some other partnerships in the pipeline. Right now, we’re only at 50% utilization,” Garza said. “So if we can get this amount of revenue from that right now, then I can only imagine at 100% and seeing almost double that later on.”
Garza added that the collaboration is a unique opportunity.

“We’re very excited for the opportunities, but moving forward this is a very unique opportunity for us to bridge that public partnership we always talk about and put our money where our mouth is,” he said.
Businesses placing their advertisement varied from dentists and medical offices, but Montalvo invites any business to work with him and place their ads on a mini billboard so it may also help the schools continue to fund scholarships for students. Restaurant ads are welcomed, but Montalvo holds the door open for more. Including ads that are already placed while summer school is in session.
“Right now, we’re pretty content, but we want to invite all businesses,” Montalvo said. “Call us so we may work with you because our current objective is to be sold out from here to August, and we’re already seeing the benefits from that.”
For a bit of history behind those mini billboards, the partnership started in 2021, but the pandemic was still looming and businesses had needed another way to reach out and grab people’s attention.

The first check made out to UISD students in December 2021 was $70,341.24, the second again to UISD students for $20,000, and the third for educational support in April of 2024 for $107,943.80.
The dollar amount is what has been accumulated over years. Montalvo mentioned if the pandemic did not happen, the school district would have seen double the figures.
Chief Financial Officer Laida Benavides approves all the advertisements before being placed at the schools so as to set an example of well rounded grammar and professionalism.
“We check for proper spelling and grammar because we’re all about education, and that’s the partnership we have,” Benavides said.

Benavides said they distribute the scholarship funds with up to $1,000 scholarships to upcoming graduates at their high schools.
“So this $20,000, and what it ended up doing for our district is we distribute $5,000 to each high school and they select the recipients of a $1000 scholarship,” Benavides said.
