PADUCAH — Several Kentucky high school and college students are celebrating receiving scholarships after the 18th Annual Scholarship Program and Reception held by the McCracken County Community Career Endowment, Inc.
35 students received scholarships, including two PaxtonScholars Classes. The MCCCE gave out nearly $80,000 in scholarships.
MCCCE Executive Director Don Mitchell has attended multiple ceremonies and said it’s good for students and local sponsors.
“With our sponsors that see what’s going on and see the kids and see what they’re majoring in and all the things they may wanna hire them. They wanna hire them and put them back to work in our area, and that’s important to have both of them see each other,” said Mitchell.
Fred and Peggy Paxton played a large part in starting the endowment, and Mitchell said the Paxtons hoped to increase diversity with scholarships like those in the PaxtonScholars Classes.
“He wanted to be diverse. He understood diversity, the importance of it, what it brought to the table, and what it brought to his companies. So, he cared about what was going on there, and it meant something in his heart,” said Mitchell.
Students like Brenda Taylor are receiving scholarships now.
“It actually means a lot to me to have somebody that’s supporting me. I’ve been getting it since my freshman year of college and it just, like, each year he checks up on me. He- he asks how I’m doing so just not even just the scholarship; it’s having him check up on me and everything that helps me through college,” said Taylor.
Others, like first-generation college students and now doctor Thailandria Daniels, are still thankful for their scholarships years later.
“I didn’t have a computer at home and internet at home and stuff like that to use so for me, like, that meant a lot,” said Dr. Daniels.
Though Dr. Daniels is already moving into her career, she advises those just starting their journey to consider their purpose.
“I guess the question is, what just kept you going?” said Dr. Daniels.
