Ukiah Unified School District is proud to announce that this year, 106 of our graduating seniors were awarded 90 scholarships, totaling an impressive $514,791. This incredible support from our community underscores the value placed on education and the promising futures of our students.
The success of our students is a reflection of the strong and generous community that surrounds them. Local organizations, businesses, and individuals have come together to provide these scholarships, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of our students’ educational aspirations. This collective effort demonstrates the powerful impact that a supportive community can have on its youth.
We are deeply grateful to all the scholarship providers who have contributed to this year’s awards. Their commitment to education and to our students’ futures is truly commendable. Here are a few examples of the scholarships that were awarded:
From the Ukiah High School Alumni Association, the Marvin DeAngeles Industrial Arts Scholarship: UHS graduate Marvin DeAngeles (Class of 1964) created this scholarship to help someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty and pursue a career in Industrial Arts. This year, Adrian Mendoza was the deserving recipient.
From the Community Foundation of Mendocino County, the Kressa Jean Shepherd Scholarship Fund: Created by Sara and John Shepherd in memory of their daughter, Kressa, to support students with a passion for the arts (visual art, design, music, theater, and dance).
Recipients are Marisol Tlelo-Perez, Jacob Kubin, Lydia Leon, Victoria Cawthon, Payton Slotte, Elizabeth Lu, Josie Bogner, Ava Rauch, Kamryn Jones, Karina Kowan, and Lucille Shakman.
From the Ukiah Education Foundation, the Billy Tatum Scholarship: Established in 2000 by UHS Alumnus Jeff Banks to honor Ukiah High Coach Bill Tatum. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate spirit, heart, and courage, display class or team leadership, and contribute to school and community. Recipients this year are Eva Bailey, Mackenzie Binkley, Mckenna Bird, Josie Bogner, Victoria Cawthon, Trenton Ford, Cannon Johnson, Sydney Kubin, Carson Maynard, and Jaxon Page.
These are just a few examples of the 90 scholarships that were awarded. Each scholarship has its own unique story and criteria, reflecting the diverse interests and values of our community. Please visit our website for a complete list.
The financial support provided by these scholarships goes beyond just covering tuition fees. It alleviates the financial stress that many students and their families face, allowing students to focus more on their studies and less on financial concerns. Additionally, receiving a scholarship is a significant morale booster; it is an acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication that these students have shown throughout their high school careers.
Scholarships also open doors to new opportunities. For some students, they can attend a school that might have otherwise been out of reach. For others, they can pursue vocational training or community college programs that will set them on the path to a successful career.
The outpouring of support for our students is a testament to the values that our community holds dear. Education, hard work, and community service are clearly valued and celebrated. The generous contributions from local organizations and individuals highlight a collective commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders, professionals, and community members.
As we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2024, we also look ahead with optimism and excitement for their futures. The scholarships they have received are not just financial awards; they are symbols of trust and belief in their potential. These students will carry with them the support and encouragement of their community as they embark on their next chapters.
