Sometimes the best way to congratulate and celebrate someone is simply to say what she or he did. No need to say “awesome.” We’ll all be awed by the facts.
There are 32 American Rhodes Scholars in the recently announced Class of 2019. Kristina Correa of Stanford University, valedictorian of the Tuloso-Midway High School Class of 2015, daughter of immigrants from Mexico, is one of them.
Why this is a really big deal:
She plans to earn two master’s degrees, in integrated immunology and computer science. We had to look up integrated immunology. The “immunology” part means that she’ll focus on the fundamental science of immunology. The “integrated” part involves the clinical and therapeutic aspects of it. Or, in plainer English: Where the rubber meets the road.
But this is not just an individual opportunity for her. She also sees it as a responsibility for her to break down cultural and economic barriers that have shaped her life. Once more, for emphasis: She is the daughter of immigrants from Mexico. We didn’t have to look that up.
