MARYVILLE, Mo. — Maryville Young Players announced last week during the Maryville High School senior awards ceremony its 2024 scholarship recipients, Brinley Conn, Maggie Farnan and Ivy Goldsmith.
All three MYP alumni are preparing to graduate and participated in multiple MYP stage productions, noted a news release. Each senior has not only been a peer leader while participating, but have remained MYP advocates, supporters and volunteers throughout their high school careers.
According to a news release, Conn is a six-year participant in MYP and was one of a small handful of students cast in a named role for every production. Conn entered MYP in the third grade as “Villager #3” in “Once on this Island Jr.” and played her final show as Mary Poppins in “Mary Poppins Jr.” She went on to volunteer backstage in three additional MYP camps and performed with multiple MYP: Second Stage productions. Conn plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and major in pre-med.
Farnan is a seven-year MYP participant, beginning her stage career as a second-grade chorus member in “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” and ended her MYP run as Von Hussler in “Mary Poppins Jr.” Farnan may be best remembered, however, as one of the first MYP actors to soar above the stage as Tinkerbell in “Peter Pan Jr.” She plans to attend Kansas State University and major in elementary education with an emphasis in special education.
Goldsmith is a five-year MYP participant, beginning in the Kingdom Chorus of “Once Upon a Mattress” and finishing her time on the MYP stage as Zazu in “The Lion King Jr.” A talented seamstress and scenery/prop maker, Goldsmith regularly volunteers with MYP and MYP: Second Stage productions. She plans to attend Northwest Missouri State University and major in graphic design and digital media.
MYP Director Vanessa Parsons noted the importance of providing scholarships.
“From our very first year, we had a dream of being able to provide our standout MYP students a small scholarship to help offset the cost of their future education,” she said in a statement. “This is particularly important in rural America, where scholarships for the arts are a bit harder to come by. MYP has always been a safe space for students to explore music, theater, dance — and for those students that have contributed so much to MYP on and off the stage, we want to do everything we can to help.”
This is the seventh year MYP has provided scholarships to outstanding high school seniors. Qualifications for the scholarship, which are judged by the MYP Board of Directors, include multiple years of MYP participation, non-MYP participation in the arts, and MYP volunteerism during their high school years.
